This is one of the most exciting times to be in healthcare as we experience healthcare reform in the United States. The 1000-plus pages of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010 and its amendments will result in a tremendous amount of federal and state regulations. There is no doubt that the healthcare system will change. However, will this change be positive for the vast majority of Americans or will the intended, and unintended, consequences of change be overwhelmingly detrimental in both a domestic and increasingly global economy.
The solutions to financing and improving the health of all Americans will be complex. These solutions become even more complex when we consider the vast amount of uninsured and undocumented citizens who reside in the United States and access our healthcare system. Solutions are also very difficult to identify because while approximately forty-six million Americans are uninsured, including 9 million uninsured children, the majority of Americans are insured. In fact, some of us are even enjoying what might be considered “Cadillac” or comprehensive health plans.
